چکیده
Coastal upwelling regions are one of the most dynamic areas world’s oceans. The California and Baja Coasts impacted by both coastal Current, leading to frontal activity that is captured gradients in Sea Surface Temperature (SST) Salinity (SSS). Sea surface temperature fronts in the California Current System from geostationary satellite observations
[1] Sea surface temperature (SST) fronts are determined for the 2001–2004 time period from Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) data in the California Current System (CCS). The probability of detecting a SST front at an individual pixel location in the CCS is presented as a bi-monthly climatology. Fronts clearly indicate the seasonal evolution of coastal upwelling, as well ...
متن کاملOn the Validation of Satellite-Derived Sea Ice Surface Temperature
The surface temperature of sea ice controls the rate of ice growth and heat exchange between the ocean and the atmosphere. An algorithm for the satellite retrieval of ice surface temperature has recently been published, but due to the lack of validation data has not been extensively tested. In this paper, data from a recent Arctic field experiment is used in an attempt to validate that algorith...
متن کاملGravity acceleration at the sea surface derived from satellite altimetry data using harmonic splines
Gravity acceleration data have grand pursuit for marine applications. Due to environmental effects, marine gravity observations always hold a high noise level. In this paper, we propose an approach to produce marine gravity data using satellite altimetry, high-resolution geopotential models and harmonic splines. On the one hand, harmonic spline functions have great capability for local gravity ...
متن کاملInvestigation of Geostrophic and Ekman Surface Current Using Satellite Altimetry Observations and Surface Wind in Persian Gulf and Oman Sea
The rise of satellite altimetry is a revolution in the ocean sciences. Due to its global coverage and its high resolution, altimetry classically outperforms in situ water level measurement. Ekman and geostrophic currents are large parts of the ocean’s current, playing a vital role in global climate variations. According to the classic oceanography, Ekman and geostrophic currents can be calculat...
متن کاملThe Relationship between Sea Height and Sea Surface Temperature on Strandings of Harbor Porpoise along the North Carolina Coast
Interns for the summer of 2004 assisted with determining whether an unusually high number of strandings of harbor porpoise during the winter of 1999 was due to an unusual juxtaposition of oceanographic features in the western the mid-Atlantic. The goal were to investigate whether a narrow band of cold water near shore followed by a strong warm water front results in higher numbers of stranded h...
